90045 Chatter
This is a weekly roundup of the 90045 online chatter that catches my eye. I tend to hang out mostly on NextDoor and the Moms’ Facebook Group, although I do loosely follow other neighborhood-related platforms. After each blurb below, I reference which platform the conversation is happening on and how you can find it.
The Moms Facebook Group is “secret.” This means that you can’t find it on Facebook unless you are a member. Email me at tracy @ living90045.com and I’ll get you hooked up. It’s a very worthwhile resource for moms and it’s open to moms from 90045, PdR and Playa Vista.
By the way, NextDoor is pretty restrictive with how you deal with your neighbors. There may be super active conversations where the original poster didn’t include my neighborhood, Kentwood South. If you see big conversations that you think the wider 90045 community might want to be aware of and you don’t see Kentwood South tagged, send me a summary and I’ll include it in the roundup.
With that, let’s look at the chatter that caught my eye this week.
Lots of Love for WAM
By all accounts, our community enjoyed the 1st Annual Westchester Arts & Music Block Party last weekend. The organizers have vowed to make it an annual event. Read the comments and/or drop your own love note on NextDoor, search “first annual.”
Got Some Spare Time On Your Hands?
A new neighbor in PdR posted that she was looking for something to get involved in and the 40 replies represent a nice rundown on volunteer opportunities in our community. NextDoor, search “need something to do.”
Another Predator To Watch Out For
Apparently, we should be paying attention to owls. They might not be big enough to carry off a dog, but their talons can reportedly do deadly damage. I love the commenter who said he’s been trying to convince his wife to leave LA to be closer to wildlife. As he pointed out, we’ve got everything except the mountain lions. NextDoor, search “huge owl stalking.”
Coyote Forum
I personally missed the Forum this week, but neighbors on NextDoor did a great job summarizing the details. A couple of highlights that I saw on that thread include “a fed coyote is a dead coyote” (feeding coyotes make them lose their fear of humans and ups their chances of needing to be euthanized), it’s illegal to feed the coyotes in any event, feeding feral cats likewise puts the ecosystem out of whack, if coyotes don’t have access to food and water, they will move on, the average coyote in our area is 18-25 lbs., hazing coyotes is humane and more. NextDoor, search “rundown on the coyote” and “handouts from westchester” and “wildlife meeting recap” and “coyote mtg starting.”
The meeting was videotaped and I’ll post the tape on facebook when it is released.
A Message To The DOLTs
OK, the message is for their owners. Are you one of those people who believes that your dog passes the Dog Off Leash Test (DOLT) with flying colors? Your neighbors on NextDoor would like to remind you that it’s illegal to walk your dog off leash. Seriously, do you really know what your dog is going to do if a coyote approaches? And why should an owner with a leashed dog not worry about your unknown, unleashed dog approaching? If you’d like to jump into the fray with an opinion, go to NextDoor and search “walking dogs off leash.”
The Big One Is Upon Us
Have you heard? The experts have been warning of the possibility of a major quake in the next few days. What do the moms do when an earthquake is threatened? They exchange ideas on what to do to get ready! Amazon is a great resource or you can shop in person at this Hawthorne store. Best advice I saw was having buckets available to use as toilets, cash on hand, flashlights with fresh batteries, a handheld radio, a full tank of gas, a 55 gallon barrel of water in the garage and a solar charger for cell phones. Moms Group, search “increased risk.”
Migraine Sufferers Unite!
Moms and migraines go together like … peas and carrots? Lots of suggestions for remedies. My money is on the food detoxes and acupuncture. 🙂 The “most intriguing” award goes to the botox suggestion. Moms Group, search “fellow migraine sufferers.”
Feel Like Greek?
Need a restaurant recommendation? Post to the Moms Group and you’ll get lots of ideas. I had no clue that we have so many Greek options nearby, including an uber authentic place named Aliki’s that most people would apparently drive past without a second thought. Moms Group, search “greek.” Or maybe you feel like Italian. There’s a post for that one this week, too. 😀 Moms Group, search “great italian.” And if it’s a great burger you’re after, search NextDoor for “best burger.”
There you go, friends! Now you’re in the 90045 know! Did I miss anything? Drop it in the comments for your neighbors!
