90045 Chatter
This is a weekly roundup of the 90045 online chatter that catches my eye. I tend to hang out mostly on NextDoor and the Moms’ Facebook Group, although I do loosely follow other neighborhood-related platforms. After each blurb below, I reference which platform the conversation is happening on and how you can find it.
The Moms Facebook Group is “secret.” This means that you can’t find it on Facebook unless you are a member. Email me at tracy @ living90045.com and I’ll get you hooked up. It’s a very worthwhile resource for moms and it’s open to moms from 90045, PdR and Playa Vista.
By the way, NextDoor is pretty restrictive with how you deal with your neighbors. There may be super active conversations where the original poster didn’t include my neighborhood, Kentwood South. If you see big conversations that you think the wider 90045 community might want to be aware of and you don’t see Kentwood South tagged, send me a summary and I’ll include it in the roundup.
With that, let’s look at the chatter that caught my eye this week.
Got Blankets?
One of my favorite animal rescue advocates is collecting blankets for the South LA shelter. If you have any left after my daughter and I cleaned you out last Spring, gather them up, please. 🙂 She reports that the South LA shelter often gets overlooked when it comes to donations, volunteers and adoptions because of its location. To share your blankets with the animals, head over to NextDoor and search “blanket drive” or drop me a note and I’ll get you connected with Claire.
PU in PV
Quite the stench hits your nose as you head north on Lincoln from 90045. Turns out that overgrown vegetation in the wetlands was presenting a mosquito problem. Mention mosquitoes these days and agencies pop to attention. The vegetation was promptly cut, but left to rot. The official statement is posted as a comment in the “what’s that smell” thread on NextDoor.
Manchester Square Update
A particularly active thread on NextDoor this week involves a post-mortem on the Manchester Square update presented at Tuesday’s Neighborhood Council meeting. The Readers Digest version is that there are probably 300 homeless people camped out at Manchester Square and LAWA is coming for its property in January 2018. This is a serious issue that we all need to monitor so that we don’t end up with all those people on our streets. Mike Bonin’s office, LAWA and a homeless advocacy agency have formed a task force. We need to keep them on task within the allotted timeline. If you want to read the 225 comments on the thread, search “good news bad news” and “big and serious problem” and “manchester square.”
Need A Vet?
Check out 20+ recommendations for 15 different vets (ok, I didn’t actually count, but you get my point) from your neighbors on NextDoor. Search “pet lovers.”
From The Book Of “You Don’t Need Them Until You Need Them”
Who knew that bed bugs were so well traveled?? If you find yourself with these little critters hanging out at your house, run — don’t walk — to NextDoor and search for “bed bugs.” There you will find tons of great advice from your neighbors.
New Restaurant In The Hood
I saw raves about this place in a couple of posts. It’s called Cafe Solar and it’s located near Manchester/Truxton. Hmmm, sounds like a little competition for Truxton’s? Read more on NextDoor (search “new restaurant”) and the Moms Group (search “next to Thai Dishes”).

Don’t Mess With The Moms
I know I say this all the time, but time and time again, I’m so impressed how the moms band together when one needs help. In this case, it’s a mom in a rent-controlled home with a new landlord up to some shady business. These kinds of issues are when you find out that we have plenty of mom lawyers in 90045. Word up, shucksters! Don’t mess with a mom. Moms Group, search “help with tenant’s rights.” And on the topic of moms swinging into action, when an elderly neighbor was evicted, the moms helped her into transitional living. If you want to join in to help, a private facebook page has been set up here.
Need A Halloween Costume For Your Little One?
The Moms Group has a very active thread where moms are listing costumes they are giving away. Search “halloween costumes.”
Looking For A Fall Harvest Farm Experience?
A mom posted on the Moms Group asking whether Underwood Farms or Tanaka Farms is the way to go. The consensus seems to be that if you want a bigger farm with more activities, Underwood is your ticket. If your kids are little, the smaller Tanaka might be a more manageable experience. Search “tanaka” for the full discussion.
There you go, friends! Now you’re in the 90045 know! Did I miss anything? Drop it in the comments for your neighbors!
