Big Changes At LAX

Have you heard? LAX is jumping headlong into its modernization project ahead of the Olympics and big changes start before the end of this month.

LAX-it (pronounced LA Exit) is the catchy new name for the new pick up area for taxis and other “ride app” services starting October 29th. Dropoffs will continue to be on the upper/departures level in the horseshoe.

The stated reason to keep taxis and app services out of the “Central Terminal Area” (“CTA”) horseshoe is to address traffic generally until other modernization updates can take that burden. Additionally, construction in the CTA is expected to further congest the area.

For more information and a countdown timer, go here. This page also has an interactive map for each terminal that shows you where to catch your shuttle and how long it will take.

There will also be restrooms, food trucks and charging stations where the shuttle drops you off for the taxis and ride app services.

Other changes to getting in and out of LAX are summarized in the handy cheat sheet below.

PLUC Meeting On Tuesday, 10/15

Our Neighborhood Council’s Planning & Land Use Committee (“PLUC”) is having its monthly meeting on Tuesday, October 15th.

Two important issues are on the agenda.

First is further discussion about LMU’s proposed Master Plan Amendment. PLUC was very hard on them last time they appeared. If you want to see what the hard questions about this project look like, attend the meeting.

NC PLUC Meeting is next Tuesday, October 15th in the Westchester Municipal Building Community Room at 7166 W Manchester Avenue. The meeting starts at 6:30 pm.

Also on the agenda is a presentation by a group seeking to add a preschool at the Methodist Church on Emerson Ave, across from Orville Wright, in the heart of Kentwood. Our understanding is that this project comes up for City approval soon, so if you want to better understand this project and share concerns and/or support with the City, you won’t want to miss the PLUC meeting.

Find the PLUC agenda here. Relevant PDFs are attached at the bottom of the agenda.

Come out and see what’s being built in our community.

Next Neighborhood Council Meeting – Tuesday, Sep 3, 2019

The LA City Charter requires the City of Los Angeles to promote organized neighborhood empowerment in the form of Neighborhood Councils. Our local council is the Neighborhood Council of Westchester/Playa (NCWP).

NCWP’s next meeting is Tuesday, September 3rd at 6:30 pm in the Community Room of the Westchester Municipal Building, located at 7166 Manchester Avenue.

For the agenda, head over to NCWP’s website.

One item that caught my attention is recognition for our Westchester Del Rey Little League Girls Softball Team as 2019 State Champions of Southern California Major Little League Softball. Way to go, girls!

Keeping Your Car Safe From Electronic Thieves

I originally wrote this post in June of 2016. Over the years, I’ve continued to point people to this post as they continue to post on NextDoor that they can’t believe they left their car door unlocked….

Last week, I started keeping my car keys in the freezer, and I may be at the forefront of a new digital safety trend.

From Osage to Kentwood, our neighbors have been reporting that their cars are being broken into, even though there are no outward signs of the breakin.

Law enforcement’s response? “Surely you must have forgotten to lock your car.”

As usual, the bad guys are miles ahead of law enforcement.

Turns out that for less than $100, a creep on a bike can can pull your door handle and your car will obediently call out for its key. While generally your car will only call out for a couple of feet, there is a cheap device available that will amplify the call significantly further.

If you’re like me and your key is 50′ away on the kitchen counter, this is bad news for the expensive sneakers I keep in my trunk.

So, what to do? Apparently keeping your keys in the freezer is one answer. I bought one of these instead.

Westchester-Playa del Rey Community Plan Update

Our Community Plan is in process for a long overdue update, but will it matter?

What Is A City Plan?

The City of Los Angeles is a massive area and to help manage land use policy decisions, the city is divided into 35 community plan areas.

Each Community Plan establishes goals and policies to guide land use and development within each plan area. Plan maps identify where uses such as jobs, housing and open space will be located. Continue reading “Westchester-Playa del Rey Community Plan Update”
