Breakfast Joints We Like In 90045

Breakfast in Westchester CADo you know about the Westchester, PdR & Playa Vista Moms Group on Facebook? 2400+ very engaged moms asking questions and offering advice on a variety of mom topics.

Today, a new mom in the neighborhood asked for recommendations for breakfast joints within a 10 minute drive, and within six hours of her request, she had 70 comments. With so much passion on the topic, I knew I needed to capture the information in a post for future reference. We do like our breakfasts out in these parts!

So, in no particular order except for some rough geo sorting, here is the list with the number of votes in parens. No parens means only a single vote. I added links to websites, facebook or yelp for more information.

I have to say, I’ve been here 15 years and have more than a little experience with many on the list, but I picked up more than one idea from this conversation. Enjoy!!

Cafe Solar Opens In Westchester

This week Team Living90045 welcomes a guest post from Shelly Niemand. Would you like to write for us? More info here.

We’re a family who loves dining out, so we couldn’t be more pleased to see a new, modern cafe open near us! Cafe Solar offers a very impressive menu with breakfast, crepes, salads, sandwiches and dinner plates, not to mention mouth-watering baked goods, organic coffee and a variety of fresh pressed juices, as well as a unique offering of kombucha & coffee on tap.

Cafe Solar Pumpkin Pancakes 90045We first tried the decadent pumpkin pancakes with chocolate chips inside. It was like dessert for breakfast, fluffy and sweet. The pumpkin latte was too sweet for me, but I usually drink black coffee.

cafe-solar-breakfast-quesedillaThe breakfast crepe quesadilla was a hearty breakfast the whole family enjoyed. The crepe, a good substitute for a tortilla, was light and full of cheese. Although, I think my favorite dish was the sesame seed croissant, I can’t get over how tasty that was with such a simple ingredient.

For lunch, I enjoyed a memorable, crispy quinoa burger. It was moist, full of flavor and not too filling, a great “veggie burger” option that isn’t full of beans or soy. I highly recommend it! I also devoured the cobb salad, which had honey smoked turkey instead of chicken – amazing salad dressing and crisp greens.

Cafe Solar Bolognese 90045For dinner we had a cannelloni crepe, which was an easy way to get my little one to eat spinach. He called it pizza! Zesty marinara & cheese in a light crepe, yum! And my favorite was the fettuccine bolognese, a hearty sweet and savory sauce with ground beef. So satisfying! I’m dying to try the apple & pumpkin pie which look delicious. And I was told they will soon have a kids menu – thank goodness!

My only critique is the price. I was a little surprised with my total each time I went, but I was happy to tip the friendly and curious staff. Westchester is the second location for this family-run cafe, which bakes all their delicious baked goods in house. The staff told me that the other location makes the fresh pressed juices.

I will frequent this place, as I want to try their whole menu! 🙂 The lovely manager was as accommodating as could be – worth checking out!

ROC Comes To Playa Vista

This week Team Living90045 welcomes a guest post from Janet Cardona. Would you like to write for us? More info here.

Chinese Dumplings in Playa Vista

Finally, a good Chinese restaurant near us! ROC stands for Republic of China and it’s located in the uber trendy Runway at Playa Vista across from Whole Foods. If you like dumplings, you will love this place.

ROC near Westchester 90045I tried the pork and chicken shanghai soup dumplings and they were amazing. My son even gave me a lesson in the proper way to eat a soup dumpling (who knew?). Step 1: using your chopsticks, place the dumpling on your soup spoon. Step 2: poke a hole in the top of the dumpling ever so delicately. Step 3: turn the dumpling over to drain the soup into the spoon. Step 4: eat the dumpling. Step 5: slurp the yummy soup broth up.

roc-pancakesThe back of the menu also has a “recommended technique on eating soup dumplings.” I also tried the scallion pancake with ginger soy dipping sauce. I could eat these all day, they were so good. I also had a taste of the beef roll with cucumbers, green onions and cilantro. It had a nice brisket-like texture and the cucumber added a nice freshness.

roc-pv-exteriorROC’s decor is modern and industrial, with exposed pipes and ducts on the ceiling and a huge open kitchen. If you are in the mood for Chinese food, this one is definitely worth checking out!

Plant Food + Wine – Vegan In Our Backyard

Plant Food + WineThis week Team Living90045 welcomes a guest post from Janet Cardona. Would you like to write for us? More info here.

I finally tried this vegan restaurant at the end of Abbot Kinney for brunch last Sunday and was floored at how flavorful and delicious the dishes were.  I tried some of their most popular dishes including the polenta scramble, ginger compressed peach salad, black bean bowl, magic myrna potato bowl and ice cream sandwich.

Plant Food + WineThe polenta scramble with wild mushrooms and sweet potato hash was super creamy and full of flavor.  The peaches in the ginger compressed peach salad were so sweet and fresh like they were just picked that morning.  The black bean bowl packed a lot of flavor with the fluffy rice and guacamole.

The magic myrna potato bowl was my favorite.  The potatoes were sweet and bought locally from the Santa Monica Farmer’s Market and the harissa sauce added an amazing, unexpected edge.  For dessert, a gluten-free chocolate chip cookie ice cream sandwich.  The cookie was the perfect mix of salty and sweet and the cashew milk ice cream was creamy and delicious!  My family and I found ourselves going “mmmm” after every bite.

Plant Food + WineIf you want to book an intimate gathering, they have a private wine room on the outside patio that serves organic wine.  They also have a cooking school upstairs if you are interested in learning some raw and vegan cooking skills.

We sat on the outdoor patio and it felt like we were on vacation in the South of France, surrounded by olive and fig trees, herb gardens, flowers and rustic, wooden tables.  Inside is just as beautiful, with French Oak floors, marble tables and a cozy fireplace.  The patio is probably gorgeous at night, with the twinkling lights throughout the trees.  This place wins for best ambiance.  I will be booking my dinner reservation soon!

Taj India Palace – A Tasty Gem In Westchester

taj india palace westchester 90045This week Team Living90045 welcomes a guest post from Janet Cardona. Would you like to write for us? More info here.

You can’t spend half of your life living in Los Angeles, without having discovered the tasty “Gem of Westchester”!  Tucked in the corner of a mini-mall on Lincoln Blvd, Taj India Palace makes you want to book a family trip to India, in hopes of finding the same amount of flavor that this small family-owned restaurant offers.

Some of my favorite dishes include the chicken tikka masala, saag aloo and naan.  The chicken tikka masala is a dream come true, with a creamy curry sauce and the perfect amount of spice.

taj india palace Westchester 90045The saag alu sends your taste buds flying!  It’s a spinach and potato dish garnished with fresh herbs that pairs perfectly with the fluffy naan bread.  If you are vegetarian, try the tofu tikka masala over plain basmati rice and the vegetable samosa.

The ambiance is casual yet romantic – perfect for date night!  The owner is charming and friendly and knows you by name.  They also have a wide variety of tasty dishes offered at the daily, lunch-buffet for only $9.95!  I highly recommend this restaurant!

Taj India Palace is located at 8320 Lincoln Blvd., Westchester, CA. The restaurant’s operating hours are Monday through Sunday, 11 am to 10:30 pm. Find Taj India Palace on the web at tajindiapalacelax.com.

Happy Weekend Westchester! And it’s been a hot one again, hasn’t it?? I couldn’t resist sharing the Heal the Bay photo above from Facebook.Tomorrow night, the Westchester Neighbors Association is hosting a Meet Your Councilman event. Councilman Mike Bonin and an MTA rep will be on hand to discuss the Hindry/Florence and other Westchester light rail stations and how we can get involved in naming the stations, landscaping, development and other issues. How cool for kids to see how this stuff can happen at a community level. I’m going to see if I can drag my 12 year old. Wish me luck. Anybody else want to join me?

Happy Weekend Westchester!I’ve been a Westchester resident for over 12 years and our community continues to impress me with its strong sense of community and willingness by so many people to help their neighbors. Case in point is the Moms of Westchester/Playa on Facebook. This group always amazes me with the information fellow moms are willing to share. In fact, I recently met a lovely family because a mom (I didn’t know) organized a Meal Train for another mom (that I didn’t know) who just had her second baby. I got a chance to share my family’s favorite sloppy joes, I got to visit a part of Playa del Rey I hadn’t visited before and I got to meet a lovely family. Win, win, win!

Contact me and I’ll help get you introduced to this closed group.Don’t miss the Westchester Kids & Family link below. This week it will take you to a wonderful list of 75 Fall activities that will occupy you well into Spring. 🙂

Happy Weekend Westchester! Are you watching mortgage interest rates? Quite a bit of chatter has come from Janet Yellen’s comments on Friday, with the consensus being that the first rate hike since 2006 might be headed our way. With luck, we won’t see it until the middle of next year. Read more at Yellen Says Debate Over When To Hike Now Center Stage.Thinking about buying? Let me hook you up with my favorite lender to discuss programs. I got word on Friday that he’s offering a 7 year ARM at 2.875%. Adjustable Rate Mortgages shouldn’t be feared. Even if you keep the loan for seven years without refinancing, the eventual rate adjustments are set by contract and very manageable. Once you’ve got yourself set up with a loan pre-approval, let’s go shopping!

If you’re thinking about selling, don’t miss my recent article 3 Reasons To Interview 3 Agents Before Listing Your Home. Listings inventory is still short in Westchester and prices continue to rise. This is an outstanding time to sell.
