A breakfast in good company
The Argonaut | By Richard Foss
I’m used to restaurant marketing, and I understand that names often reflect what a place once was rather than what it is. When I went to the legendary Iron Works Barbecue in Austin, it was with the understanding that no blacksmithing was currently in progress. It’s just a name, one that honors activities that once occurred there.
On the other hand, when I went to a place called Coffee Company in Westchester, I rather expected to be able to buy coffee — perhaps even several kinds of coffee, since I could see roasted beans through the glass-fronted bins by the register. When I asked about buying half a pound of dark roast, an employee explained that they used to sell it but don’t much anymore. The only thing she had for sale was caramel hazelnut, and since I’m not a fan of flavored drinks I declined.
What Coffee Company does very well is
A meal with a side of sound
Since December 2010, First Friday diners have been able to partake in a diverse array of epicurean delights served on wheels, including morsels from The Greasy Wiener, Mango Tango, Rajin Cajun on Wheels, India Jones Chow Truck, Cousins Maine Lobster, Waffles De Liege, and even the vehicle that started L.A.’s food truck craze: Roy Choi’s Kogi truck. A customer might hit up The Melt for a Parisian Melt — a brie, apple and honey baguette sandwich — with a cup of their wild mushroom soup, and then grab a double-decker ice cream sandwich at Paradise Cookies and Ice Cream for dessert.
This year music became the whipped cream on the sundae, so to speak, when McNay performed with his banjo and the seven-piece country outfit Rhubarb Meringue Pie.

Mother and daughter team hope to make Westchester sweeter with frozen yogurt shop
Whether you’re a red velvet cupcake batter with chocolate sprinkles kind of guy or an apricot tart with fresh strawberries kind of woman, Westchester’s Yogurtland has enough flavors and toppings to satisfy the most discriminating of palettes.
Since opening on January 22, Yogurtland has been popular with community members, students and people on their way to and from LAX, surpassing expectations for Sharon Lee who owns the Westchester Yogurtland location with her mother, Ann Lee.
Zoe and I can confirm that the yogurt is dee-lish! I went nuts for the Maple Cookie, but hurry! It’s a March specialty.
Yogurtland is located at 8752 S. Sepulveda Boulevard in Westchester.

UPDATE: two-fer coupons arrived in the mail on 3/11 with the local grocery ads. And, sadly, it looks like the Maple Cookie stays on the menu only through the end of this week. 😦
Proud Bird restaurant at LAX gets 1-year reprieve

Did you think you missed your chance to experience the Proud Bird restaurant at LAX?
The iconic restaurant had planned to close in November and then December due to a rent dispute with LA World Airports, but a tentative agreement has been reached allowing the restaurant to stay open at least one more year.
About the Proud Bird from the Daily Breeze:
The Proud Bird, which specializes in steaks and seafood, is located on Aviation Boulevard in Westchester, just east of two parallel runways — Runways 25R and 25L — on the south side of the airport. It’s a popular meeting point for plane spotters, or people (often tourists) who take pictures of airplanes landing and taking off. The restaurant maintains a large collection of historic airplanes parked outside the dining room.
If the agreement is approved by the Board of Airport Commissioners in January, Proud Bird will be open at least until January 31, 2015. Don’t wait, though. I know from personal experience that reservations will sell out long before the actual close. 😉
