Finding Peace in Chaotic Times

This week Team Living90045 welcomes a very timely guest post from Dr. Terry Binkovitz. Would you like to write for us? More info here.

I don’t think you can find anyone that hasn’t been affected by changes that have come about by our recent political climate. We are now saturated with continual information and media coming at us. It has created a time where there are many conflicting opinions and feelings.

In Jungian Psychology, Carl Jung referred to the shadow as including everything outside the light of consciousness, and this could be positive or negative. If the shadow remains hidden or denied it will be projected onto others and the world, wrecking havoc and destruction. Coming to terms with the shadow means we must accept and understand it in the most creative way as possible. The shadow can not solely be seen as evil or negative; it also contains natural, life-giving, unrecognized creative potentials.

Therefore, we have to find those places that can become our sacred sanctuaries and create those experiences that can nurture our being. If you are feeling confused during this time, consider the idea of “co-fusing” new ideas together; and until the new ideas have been integrated into our thinking they will feel chaotic.

As we undergo change, we are redefining our attitudes and beliefs. Look to see if your new definitions and beliefs are ones that you actually prefer. Take time to examine your own shadow before you go out and try to change the external world. It is key during this time to practice kindness, generosity and gratitude. It will lift your spirit to the point of rising above chaos. Spend time in nature to reset your body and soul to its natural state of being.

And remember to hold on tight, because we will continue to ride these turbulent waves as more change offers us more opportunities to grow. How else can our lives get our attention and wake us up to what wants to happen within us? Clear your mind of unnecessary thoughts and feelings that clutter your thinking. Meditation, long walks and exercise are good ways to calm overstimulated brains. Surround yourself with beauty to remind yourself of the creative forces that do exist.

And, most importantly, breathe deeply.

Cafe Solar Opens In Westchester

This week Team Living90045 welcomes a guest post from Shelly Niemand. Would you like to write for us? More info here.

We’re a family who loves dining out, so we couldn’t be more pleased to see a new, modern cafe open near us! Cafe Solar offers a very impressive menu with breakfast, crepes, salads, sandwiches and dinner plates, not to mention mouth-watering baked goods, organic coffee and a variety of fresh pressed juices, as well as a unique offering of kombucha & coffee on tap.

Cafe Solar Pumpkin Pancakes 90045We first tried the decadent pumpkin pancakes with chocolate chips inside. It was like dessert for breakfast, fluffy and sweet. The pumpkin latte was too sweet for me, but I usually drink black coffee.

cafe-solar-breakfast-quesedillaThe breakfast crepe quesadilla was a hearty breakfast the whole family enjoyed. The crepe, a good substitute for a tortilla, was light and full of cheese. Although, I think my favorite dish was the sesame seed croissant, I can’t get over how tasty that was with such a simple ingredient.

For lunch, I enjoyed a memorable, crispy quinoa burger. It was moist, full of flavor and not too filling, a great “veggie burger” option that isn’t full of beans or soy. I highly recommend it! I also devoured the cobb salad, which had honey smoked turkey instead of chicken – amazing salad dressing and crisp greens.

Cafe Solar Bolognese 90045For dinner we had a cannelloni crepe, which was an easy way to get my little one to eat spinach. He called it pizza! Zesty marinara & cheese in a light crepe, yum! And my favorite was the fettuccine bolognese, a hearty sweet and savory sauce with ground beef. So satisfying! I’m dying to try the apple & pumpkin pie which look delicious. And I was told they will soon have a kids menu – thank goodness!

My only critique is the price. I was a little surprised with my total each time I went, but I was happy to tip the friendly and curious staff. Westchester is the second location for this family-run cafe, which bakes all their delicious baked goods in house. The staff told me that the other location makes the fresh pressed juices.

I will frequent this place, as I want to try their whole menu! 🙂 The lovely manager was as accommodating as could be – worth checking out!

Westchester Playa Safety Forum

Packed house for Safety Forum
Packed house for Safety Forum

A Westchester/ Playa Public Safety Town Hall was recently held featuring Councilman Mike Bonin and various law enforcement agencies. I wanted to share a couple of my takeaways from the event.

First, Mike Bonin monitors social posts and hears what we’re saying about crime. He says that we need to insist on more officers for our area. Our complaints reinforce his insistence at budget time that we need more support. He’s working on a plan to institute a “constant staffing” model similar to what the fire department uses. Complaining on NextDoor and other social media platforms is not helpful. Calls, emails and letters to his office are.

Second, Pacific Division Captain Nicole Alberca wants us to know that Pacific Division leads the entire city in crime reduction. Our Senior Lead Officer covering Westchester west of Sepulveda, Ruben Garcia, leads Pacific Division in crime reduction.

Third, US Postal Inspector Gerry Ramirez says that all of SoCal is experiencing big mail crime problems due to meth and other drug addiction issues. He advises not leaving personal mail in home mailboxes overnight and not dropping mail in blue street corner and post office boxes after the last posted pick up.

Fourth, Angel Gomez, Pacific Division Detective for property crimes, encourages victims and witnesses to stay involved in cases through trial or the criminal will go free. He also wants people to know that detectives carry heavy caseloads. They want to help, but can’t without evidence and active witnesses. He also wants us to know that we need to lock our homes and cars. A drug addict only needs $5 to secure a high, and will steal your loose change. He also shared a story about a local family who were gone 20 minutes and within that time, a girl crawled through an unlocked window and made off with $25K in valuables in 10 minutes.

Finally, a question from the floor elicited the following about LAPD response times: Calls are prioritized – Code 3 is a crime in progress and the average response time with lights and sirens is 6 minutes; Code 2 is no imminent danger and the average response time (no lights, no sirens) is 18 minutes; Uncoded calls (barking dogs, etc.) have an average response time of 41 minutes. These are Pacific Division times and are all well under the average LA City times. 911 calls do NOT go to the Pacific Division station. They go to a dispatch center in the Valley and the operator may or may not be familiar with our area. Be prepared to provide additional details as needed.

Did you attend the event? Did I miss any other big points? Please share in the comments.
