Big Changes At LAX

Have you heard? LAX is jumping headlong into its modernization project ahead of the Olympics and big changes start before the end of this month.

LAX-it (pronounced LA Exit) is the catchy new name for the new pick up area for taxis and other “ride app” services starting October 29th. Dropoffs will continue to be on the upper/departures level in the horseshoe.

The stated reason to keep taxis and app services out of the “Central Terminal Area” (“CTA”) horseshoe is to address traffic generally until other modernization updates can take that burden. Additionally, construction in the CTA is expected to further congest the area.

For more information and a countdown timer, go here. This page also has an interactive map for each terminal that shows you where to catch your shuttle and how long it will take.

There will also be restrooms, food trucks and charging stations where the shuttle drops you off for the taxis and ride app services.

Other changes to getting in and out of LAX are summarized in the handy cheat sheet below.

Westchester-Playa del Rey Community Plan Update

Our Community Plan is in process for a long overdue update, but will it matter?

What Is A City Plan?

The City of Los Angeles is a massive area and to help manage land use policy decisions, the city is divided into 35 community plan areas.

Each Community Plan establishes goals and policies to guide land use and development within each plan area. Plan maps identify where uses such as jobs, housing and open space will be located. Continue reading “Westchester-Playa del Rey Community Plan Update”

Happy Sunday & Happy Oscar Day!

Are you as ready as I am for Election Day to get here and be gone? Social media has been so exhausting lately, right?

Well my favorite candidate is canvassing today in our neighborhood. If you get a door knock, peek out and see if Nick Melvoin is on the other side. This is what he looks like. 🙂 OK, maybe you’ll find this photo more helpful.

On the topic of our City Council race, Mike Bonin and Robin Rudisill are appearing tomorrow night at the forum hosted by the Westside Regional Alliance of Councils. WRAC is group of Westside Neighborhood Councils. All three candidates were invited. Initially Rudisill and Ryavec were pretty vocal about not showing for reasons that I don’t recall. Rudisill apparently figured out a way to change her schedule and Ryavec is submitting pre-recorded responses to questions. Bummer! I would loved to have seen all three interact with each other.

If you can’t attend, WRAC is live-streaming the event on its Facebook Page. If you are attending, WRAC wants you to know that Windward School is located at 11350 Palms Blvd., but the parking entrance is located at 3481 Sawtelle Blvd.

Who has a spare sewing machine?? A WISH teacher reported on NextDoor that she is teaching over 100 kids to sew on four machines and is asking for the community’s help in providing additional machines. If you don’t have access to NextDoor and want to help, email me at tracy@living90045.com and I’ll facilitate.

Here are links to a couple of news items that caught our eye this week:

WISH Charter is offering a Summer Art Camp to the public for 5-8 year olds
Registration for YMCA Summer Camps has opened
Practical advice for dumping the clutter
Thieves steal everything from Playa del Rey man, including his dog
Returning hero has big plans for WHS’s baseball program
Ramen Joint scores a business spotlight
LMU Extension class wants to help you write, share and sell your story

Have a great week!

Happy Sunday & Happy Pre-Valentine’s Day!

Does the thought of going out on Valentine’s Day bring up visions of crammed restaurants pushing out mediocre food as fast as they can? I saw that Playa Provisions is having a whiskey & small bites event on Monday, the night before Valentine’s Day. It sounds way more appealing to me to have a nice dinner with my sweetie the night before the big event, and Playa del Rey is an easy Uber ride away. More information here.

And going out Monday will free you up to join us on Tuesday for the Kentwood Home Guardian’s monthly board meeting. Win-win! 😉

And if all that isn’t exciting enough for you, Wednesday is the LAPD Pacific Division’s Public Safety Town Hall. Oh yeah, there’s gonna be a lot of partying going on in our little burg this week. More info on the Town Hall here.

Are you planning on mailing in your election ballot? You have until March 6th and the County Clerk has set up 69 places for you to drop your ballot, if you’re not feeling the post office these days. The closest locations for us appear to be the LAX Courthouse, the El Segundo Civic Center and the Manhattan Beach City Hall. Get hours and addresses here.

P.S. There is plenty of demand from buyers for homes in our community, but very little interesting inventory on the market right now, making it a good time to sell. Are you thinking about selling? Find out what your home is worth here.

Westchester Weekly - News for Westchester families

Happy Sunday!

Well it’s been a week, hasn’t it? My family was super happy to see Measure M pass and look forward to having a world class transportation system in LA. OK, someday having a world class system. 🙂 Next up? City and school board elections in March. Do you think people will turn out to vote or is everybody burned out?

Turning our attention back to local issues, the Planning Commission voted this week to give Kentwood the more liberal R1Vnew designation when our zoning ICO expires in March. I was at the hearing and will write more about this in the near future. In the meantime, if you don’t live in Kentwood, you really should read this article about impending changes in the other parts of the City, including non-Kentwood Westchester neighborhoods.

Other local issues of note are (1) the WNA meeting on Monday; and (2) the brewing fire station controversy. The WNA or Westchester Neighbors Association is a group that has been around as long as I’ve been paying attention to Westchester politics (+/- 2008). They haven’t been very active, but I’m checking them out tomorrow night to see if they might provide a good forum for addressing our local issues. As a bonus, Mike Bonin is appearing at the meeting to report on what’s “hot” in Westchester and presumably to take questions.

Speaking of what’s “hot,” there has been a super heated conversation on NextDoor about the future of the old Westchester fire station at 85th/Dunbarton. Mike Bonin has offered up that property as part of his “potential affordable housing opportunities in LA” initiative. The property might be used as affordable housing or it might be sold to finance other affordable housing opportunities. Look for the Kentwood Home Guardians to get involved with this issue as the fire station falls squarely within the association’s borders. If you aren’t a KHG member, you can give input on the Councilman’s website here.

And on the topic of our wallets (how much more local can we get?), my real estate trend graphs have been updated to reflect the October numbers. Prices continued their steady upward climb, but the pace of sales slowed. Is the pace related to the election as people took a “wait and see what happens” approach? Or maybe the slowdown is simply seasonal. We’ll see. A republican administration presumably bodes well for business and, hence, real estate.

Have a great week!

Happy Weekend Westchester! And it’s been a hot one again, hasn’t it?? I couldn’t resist sharing the Heal the Bay photo above from Facebook.Tomorrow night, the Westchester Neighbors Association is hosting a Meet Your Councilman event. Councilman Mike Bonin and an MTA rep will be on hand to discuss the Hindry/Florence and other Westchester light rail stations and how we can get involved in naming the stations, landscaping, development and other issues. How cool for kids to see how this stuff can happen at a community level. I’m going to see if I can drag my 12 year old. Wish me luck. Anybody else want to join me?

Happy Weekend Westchester!I’ve been a Westchester resident for over 12 years and our community continues to impress me with its strong sense of community and willingness by so many people to help their neighbors. Case in point is the Moms of Westchester/Playa on Facebook. This group always amazes me with the information fellow moms are willing to share. In fact, I recently met a lovely family because a mom (I didn’t know) organized a Meal Train for another mom (that I didn’t know) who just had her second baby. I got a chance to share my family’s favorite sloppy joes, I got to visit a part of Playa del Rey I hadn’t visited before and I got to meet a lovely family. Win, win, win!

Contact me and I’ll help get you introduced to this closed group.Don’t miss the Westchester Kids & Family link below. This week it will take you to a wonderful list of 75 Fall activities that will occupy you well into Spring. 🙂
